Cape Fear **** (March 9th)

Posted: March 9, 2010 in Movies

Cape Fear is incredibly creepy yet incredibly intriguing at the same time.

Cape Fear is one of the most interesting films I have ever watched. Not necessarily because of the story (although that was pretty awesome also) but because of how it was shot. Every camera angle seems very deliberate and are all very unique. There are all kinds of long zooms, intense close ups, and a lot of quick cuts. Just the filming makes you nervous.

This movie is about a man who is put in jail for 15 years for raping a 16 year old girl and is released. After he gets out he tracks down his attorney and stalks and plots to torture and kill his family as payment for the punishment he was put through in jail. Robert De Niro is the antagonist and does an incredible job at creeping you out the entire film. You never really know what he’s thinking and always feel on edge when he’s on screen.

As for the other actors? Well they really could have been anybody. Nick Nolte did a fine job, Jessica Lange did a fine job, and Juliette Lewis was just annoying. I’ve never really liked her work though. Overall the acting was fine though. I think this movie really rides on just the tension that Scorsese builds through the cinematography and music.

This is definitely a movie to watch even though it’s pretty obvious it was made in the early 90s. I give it a 4 out of 5.
